Earthquake risk reduction behaviour in organisations

Understanding what organisations are doing to stay safe in New Zealand's seismically active environment, and what helps or hinders them implementing earthquake risk reduction efforts.

Project overview

New Zealand is ranked the second riskiest country in the world for expected loss from natural disasters. We have to involve all of society to create a resilient New Zealand able to co-exist with our natural hazards.

Organisations play a critical role in building that resilient nation. Organisations that effectively manage natural hazard risk provide safety for their employees, minimise economic losses through downtime, and are able to support community recovery by providing key services, employment, and economic stimulus.

The development of more resilient organisations aligns with New Zealand’s National Disaster Resilience Strategy, which includes economic resilience in its holistic consideration of community resilience.

The aim of the project was to help determine:

  1. Current earthquake risk reduction methods implemented within organisations.
  2. Resources utilised by organisations to inform earthquake impact reduction efforts.
  3. What helps and what hinders organisations implementation of earthquake risk reduction efforts.

The project is a collaborative initiative, funded by EQC as part of the Biennial Research Funding Programme, and is led by Dr Tracy Hatton and Sophie Horsfall of Resilient Organisations, Christchurch. The Resilient Organisations team will be supported by Dr Toni Collins, University of Canterbury, and Dave Brunsdon, Kestrel Group.
