Critical infrastructure recovery decisions

Combining data and lessons learned to provide an evidence base to support critical infrastructure recovery decisions following the North Island extreme weather events.

The 2023 North Island Extreme Weather Events caused significant damage to infrastructure systems, leaving some communities without essential services for weeks.

With funding from the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment, as part of the Extreme Weather Science Response initiative, we developed a set of policy briefs to support critical infrastructure recovery.

The two policy briefs (and supplementary reports) were released 5 months after the weather event to support critical infrastructure providers in the recovery planning.

While the briefs were developed in response to the 2023 events, their findings will be valuable in support of future hazard events and critical infrastructure recovery programmes.
