A systems approach to climate change, water, and wellbeing

Climate change is going to bring increased flooding and droughts for many regions in New Zealand. How will this impact individual and collective wellbeing? And what can we do to reduce the impact?

In this Deep South funded project, we collaborated with ME Research, GNS Science and EM Consulting to develop a visual platform that maps how rainfall extremes (too much and too little) affect our economy and public health.

The platform is designed to help users understand how climate change impacts might affect us and how policy interventions can best mitigate or adapt to adverse climate effects.

Using system dynamics mapping, we have created a comprehensive map of the connections between freshwater systems, our economy and human health.

The platform can support users when they are considering different adaptation decisions. The platform can help users understand where in the system we should act to mitigate impacts on the things we care about the most.

This platform provides:

  • A shared understanding of the system for policy analysis and narratives useful for community engagement;
  • A macroscope view of system interactions – useful for model scoping and understanding how disciplinary specific research fits into the larger system;
  • A base for further extensions (e.g., including other wellbeings and climate hazards).
