Why a Conference on Reconstruction?

Should New Zealand or any other country be struck by a major disaster, there will be a need to rapidly rebuild and repair critical infrastructure, housing and commercial premises.

 

International experience highlights that delivering a fast, effective and affordable reconstruction effort is fraught with challenges. All countries must consider in advance how to best use limited construction resources, what planning and legislation changes might be needed to speed the reconstruction process, and to ensure that opportunities are taken to 'rebuild back better'.

 

This conference will bring together leading international experts in post-disaster reconstruction and will provide a valuable opportunity for those in the construction industry, NGO's, emergency managers, insurers and planners to come together to learn, debate and work together to develop solutions.

 

Conference Themes

The 4th 2008 i-Rec conference will focus on several key areas that contribute to the reconstruction:

Project management and stakeholder participation in reconstruction
The focus of this theme includes coordination and management of reconstruction, procurement and delivery of projects and engagement of stakeholders in the process.

Legal and policy frameworks for reconstruction
The focus of this theme includes legislation, policy and regulation that impact on reconstruction efforts.

Finance and resources for reconstruction
The focus of this theme includes the way in which reconstruction is funded and resourced through insurance, aid and self-help.

Urban planning and design for post-disaster reconstruction
The focus of this theme covers the reestablishment of buildings and the urban environment in disaster hit communities.

Education and training for reconstruction
The focus of this theme is on the applicability to reconstruction practice of the growing number of vocational training and tertiary courses in the emergency management and disaster relief field.

About the 4th International i-Rec Conference

i-Rec is the International Group for Research and Information on Post-Disaster Reconstruction.

The 2008 4th International i-Rec conference is the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. It is being organized by the New Zealand ‘Resilient Organisations’ research team and proudly hosted by University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

The 4th i-Rec conference will be held in conjunction with the CIB (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) meeting of CIB Task Group TG63 - Disaster and The Built Environment.
