Best Practice principles for improving resilience

Best practice principles and ‘real-world’ examples are to be identified and promoted throughout the research programme.

In particular the case studies and research into the performance of organisations following actual hazard events (such as the Boxing Day tsunami and Greymouth tornado) will provide source material for this research output.

In order to improve their Resilience Organisations must:

  • establish an effective work programme to develop and maintain response capability by, acquiring familiarity with roles and procedures, putting policies & communication templates in place, inducting for new personnel
  • identify dedicated resources to lead this programme
  • build external support networks to be able to immediately involve: other organisations for direct operational assistance, other organisations for resource support, experienced Emergency Management professionals

In order to translate these musts into Best Practice Principle these issues have been identified and ranked as high priority for the research:

C1. Training and exercising for organisation specific Consequences Scenarios
C2. Training and exercising for low probability, high impact events
C3. Create a business case study
C4. Analysing ‘real-world’ examples: lessons for New Zealand
